Description: Shot Caller is a 2017 film that follows the story of Jacob Harlon, a successful stockbroker living in California with his wife Katherine and son Joshua. After driving under the influence one night, Jacob causes a fatal accident, resulting in the death of one of his friends. He accepts a plea deal and is sentenced to 16 months at the California Institution for Men in Chino.
Upon arrival, Jacob witnesses the harsh realities of prison life, including a gang rape. Realizing his survival depends on adapting, he defends himself against another inmate, gaining the attention of Bottles, the leader of a white supremacist gang. To secure protection and his place in the gang, Jacob is forced to smuggle heroin and commit violent acts, including killing a snitch. Over time, he rises in the ranks, adopts the alias “Money,” and becomes increasingly hardened by his experiences. During a prison riot, Jacob stabs an inmate to save the leader of a rival gang, earning respect from others but extending his sentence by nine years. He severs contact with his family, urging them to move on without him.
Later, Jacob is transferred to Corcoran State Prison, where he meets “The Beast,” the head of the Aryan Brotherhood. Impressed by Jacob’s loyalty, The Beast promotes him to second-in-command. As his release approaches, Jacob is ordered to oversee a weapons deal with a rival gang, despite the risk of violating his parole. Reluctantly, he agrees when The Beast threatens his family. After his release, Jacob is met by gang members, including Howie, a young war veteran with no criminal record. Jacob survives an attack at a party and asserts his authority over Howie.
Meanwhile, Jacob’s parole officer, Ed Kutcher, learns of the weapons deal and begins surveillance. Jacob discovers that one of his gang members, Shotgun, is Kutcher’s informant, setting the stage for a dangerous confrontation.
