Description: **Shesh Rokkha 2024 – A Cinematic Journey**
**Storyline:**
Memory serves as a profound theme in storytelling, prevalent in both literature and film. When executed effectively, it resonates deeply with audiences. Acclaimed Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón masterfully crafted his memories into a poignant screen autobiography entitled “Roma” (2019). Similarly, Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul explored this theme in his intricate 2021 film, “Memoria.” In the same vein, Avinash Arun, known for “Killa” (2014), returns with a contemplative piece titled “Three of Us,” starring Shefali Shah, who conveys powerful emotions without uttering a word—an experience that left me moved multiple times throughout the film.
In “Shesh Rokkha,” Shah portrays Shailaja, a middle-aged woman from Mumbai. She persuades her husband, Dipankar, portrayed by Swanand Kirkire, to accompany her on a journey to Vengurla, a tranquil village in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district. Though Dipankar typically demands his wife fetch him salt from the dinner table, he obliges and they venture to a place where Shailaja spent four years of her childhood.
In Vengurla, Shailaja reconnects with her childhood friends, recognizing them effortlessly despite the 28 years that have passed since their last meeting. She visits her first love, Pradeep, an employee at the local bank, where she manages to get her name into his hands. Initially taken aback by the flood of memories (delivered without the cheesy flashbacks often seen in mainstream cinema), Pradeep, played by Jaideep Ahlawat, acquiesces to Shailaja’s unspoken request for a reunion, leading to a heartwarming revisitation of their youthful days.
Together, they navigate through the remnants of her memories, revisiting cherished locations and reminiscing about the past. Pradeep is portrayed as a complex character who struggles to trust others, yet his imposing presence contrasts with his introspective side, as he writes and embroiders to channel his feelings. Dipankar shares similar traits, displaying a subtle generosity that evokes parallels with characters from films like “Past Lives.” However, while there may be surface-level similarities, Shesh Rokkha possesses its own distinct narrative depth.
