The project was announced in May 2019, with principal photography starting the same month and concluding in January 2020. Karan Johar confirmed in 2018 that he would produce a biopic on Captain Vikram Batra’s life. Sidharth Malhotra was chosen to play the dual roles, and after considering several actresses, Kiara Advani was cast as Dimple Cheema. Malhotra began military training for the film on April 17, 2019. Initially, the film was rumored to be titled “Mera Dil Maange More,” but it was later changed to “Shershaah.” The official announcement was made on May 2, 2019, with filming locations including Chandigarh, Palampur, Kargil-Ladakh, and Kashmir. Principal photography commenced on May 7, 2019, and wrapped up on January 12, 2020. Additional filming was completed on October 23, 2020.
Directed by Vishnu Varadhan, Shershaah is inspired by the life of Captain Vikram Batra, a Kargil War hero. Ahead of the film’s release, photos shared by Batra’s family offered a glimpse into his life and legacy.
