Description: In 2017, New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor receives a tip that actress Rose McGowan was sexually assaulted by Indiewood producer Harvey Weinstein. Initially, McGowan declines to comment but later describes an encounter where Weinstein raped her when she was 23. Kantor also speaks with actresses Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow, who share their own experiences with Weinstein but request anonymity due to fears of career repercussions. Facing challenges in her investigation, Kantor enlists Megan Twohey to assist.
Twohey investigates a former Miramax assistant who vanished years ago, but the woman refuses to speak, citing an NDA. Kantor confronts Miramax’s former CFO about payouts Weinstein made to his accusers, but he avoids providing details. Twohey is similarly unsuccessful when seeking more information from the EEOC. She later discovers that Weinstein’s social connections with the district attorney’s office led to the quick dismissal of criminal complaints against him.
Kantor learns of three former Weinstein assistants—Rowena Chiu, Zelda Perkins, and Laura Madden—who may have been abused. She travels to meet them individually but cannot contact Chiu. Perkins recounts an incident where Chiu had a breakdown due to a sexual encounter with Weinstein. Madden initially refuses to speak but changes her mind after Weinstein’s representative discourages her from sharing her story. Weinstein eventually learns of the investigation and sends a lawyer to address the reporters but denies all allegations.
