Description: The film “Shatranj Ke Khilari,” released in 1977, is set in the year 1856. It tells the story of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the ruler of Awadh, one of India’s last independent kingdoms. The British colonizers, eager to seize control of this prosperous region, dispatch General Outram on a covert mission to pave the way for annexation. Amidst growing political tension and strategic maneuvers, the Nawab remains preoccupied with personal pleasures and religious pursuits. Meanwhile, the court fails to provide any meaningful support. Two court nobles, Mir and Mirza, neglect their responsibilities to their country and families, spending their days engrossed in endless chess games. The film is an adaptation of Munshi Premchand’s short story of the same name.
