Description: Benjamin Caron’s “Sharper,” released in 2023, is currently available in limited theaters and will soon stream on Apple TV+. The film evokes the style of ‘80s David Mamet screenplays like “House of Games” or “The Spanish Prisoner,” where Julianne Moore and John Lithgow would have thrived. It’s a narrative puzzle that shifts between different cons, offering a twist-filled experience. However, while the structure is engaging, the dialogue lacks the sharpness and depth found in Mamet’s work, leaving the story feeling more like a decent diversion than a standout thriller.
The plot follows Tom, played by Justice Smith, a quiet young man working in a bookstore that sells rare first editions. His life takes an unexpected turn when Sandra, portrayed by Briana Middleton, enters the shop. The two quickly form a connection, diving into a whirlwind romance. Within weeks, Sandra is introduced to Tom’s friends, and their relationship deepens. But Sandra soon reveals her brother is in serious trouble and needs a large sum of money. Tom, desperate to help, turns to his wealthy father, Richard (John Lithgow), for the funds. Predictably, Sandra vanishes with the money, leaving Tom shocked and betrayed.
The film attempts to mirror Mamet’s signature style of using dialogue as a weapon, where characters reveal and conceal information like a well-executed magic trick. However, the execution falls short, making “Sharper” a moderately entertaining but ultimately forgettable watch. Despite its flaws, the movie offers a glimpse into a world of deceit and manipulation, though it never fully reaches its potential.
