The project was officially announced in May 2018 through a motion poster, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as the titular character, Shamshera. Vaani Kapoor, who plays the female lead, underwent professional Kathak training to prepare for her role as a dancer. Sanjay Dutt was cast as the antagonist.
Principal photography began in December 2018, with a significant portion of the film shot at a massive fort constructed in Film City, Goregaon. The fort required two months of preparation and the labor of nearly 300 workers. Filming concluded in September 2020.
Critics praised Ranbir Kapoor’s performance, with Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost describing him as “gorgeous in every imaginable way” in terms of acting, charisma, and action sequences. Tina Das of The Print highlighted the film’s emotional depth and realistic portrayal of caste dynamics, while Avinash Lohana of Pinkvilla commended its balance of drama, action, romance, and humor, making it an engaging masala entertainer.
