Storyline:
On the eve of the 1968 U.S. presidential election, George Roundy, a successful Beverly Hills hairdresser, meets Felicia, one of his many clients and sexual partners, at a hotel. During their encounter, George receives a call from Jill, his young and aspiring actress girlfriend, who is experiencing a panic attack, fearing an intruder in her home. George rushes to comfort Jill, leaving Felicia frustrated.
Despite his charm and profession, which allows him to connect with numerous beautiful women, 34-year-old George feels unfulfilled in his career. Although he is the creative force at the salon where he works, he remains overshadowed by Norman, the salon’s mediocre owner. George dreams of opening his own salon but struggles to secure the necessary funding.
In hopes of finding financial support, George approaches Felicia and her husband, Lester. However, this leads to another complication: Lester’s current mistress, Jackie, is George’s ex-girlfriend and one of his most significant past relationships. Jackie is also close friends with Jill, adding to the tangled dynamic.
Jackie arranges for George to style her hair, and he replicates Felicia’s look. The two share a moment of tension, and George attempts to kiss her. Initially resistant, Jackie eventually reciprocates. Just as they are about to go further, Lester arrives, forcing them to pretend George was merely finishing her hairstyle.
Unaware of George’s history with Jackie, Lester invites him to escort her to a Republican Party election-night event. At the gathering, George finds himself surrounded by several of his current and former lovers, including Jill, who is accompanied by Johnny Pope.
