Description: “Shahid,” a 2012 film, tells the story of Shahid Azmi and his family, who face terror during the Bombay riots, where many Hindus and Muslims lost their lives. Shahid later travels to Kashmir and briefly stays at a terror training camp but leaves after witnessing an execution. Returning to Mumbai, he is arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act for allegedly plotting to assassinate politicians. Despite his brother Arif’s efforts to bail him out, Shahid is tortured by the police, forced to confess, and spends seven years in Tihar Jail. During his imprisonment, Omar Sheikh attempts to brainwash him, while another inmate inspires him to pursue his education. After his acquittal, Shahid studies law in Mumbai.
After earning his law degree, Shahid works with lawyer Maqbool Memon before starting his independent practice with financial support from Arif. He marries Mariam, a Muslim divorcee, and begins taking on cases of Muslims charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). He wins his first major case by securing an acquittal for Arif Paanwala, who was accused in the 2002 Mumbai bus bombing. Shahid later represents defendants in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, the Aurangabad arms haul, and the Malegaon bombings. Despite facing criticism and threats, he continues his work. While defending Faheem Ansari in the 2008 Mumbai attacks case, Shahid is shot and killed in his office. Ultimately, Ansari is acquitted by the Supreme Court of India due to insufficient evidence.
