**Storyline:**
In Los Angeles, Ben Thomas harshly criticizes a sales representative, Ezra Turner, during a phone call. Despite being blind, Ezra remains calm and politely ends the conversation. Later, Ben secretly investigates Emily Posa, who is receiving treatment for a congenital heart condition, at an IRS office after hours. When his brother calls, Ben denies taking something from his home.
At a care facility for the elderly, Ben poses as an IRS agent. The administrator, Stewart Goodman, boasts about cutting costs while purchasing a new BMW for himself. Having financed an unsuccessful bone marrow transplant, Stewart requests an extension from the IRS until he receives a bonus. When Ben asks a resident named Inez about Stewart’s character, she reveals his cruel treatment, including denying her basic care. Outraged, Ben personally tends to Inez and refuses Stewart’s request.
Ben informs Emily that she is being audited and surprises her with assistance in managing her debts. As they grow closer, Ben moves into a motel room, where he keeps a dangerous box jellyfish.
Seeking people to help, Ben approaches Holly, a child and family services worker. She directs him to Connie Tepos, a Hispanic immigrant trapped in an abusive relationship. Ben urges Connie to take action and later donates a kidney to George, a hockey coach who supports his players’ college education.
When Emily is hospitalized, Ben stays by her side, sharing a heartfelt story about a boy named Tim and his younger brother. Meanwhile, Connie, beaten by her boyfriend, contacts Ben. He gives her the deed to his house, offering her and her children a safe refuge.
