Description: The 2014 film *Selma* tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his leadership in the fight for voting rights during the civil rights movement. The film begins in 1964 with Dr. King receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Shortly after, a tragic bombing at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, kills four young black girls. In Selma, Alabama, Annie Lee Cooper is denied the right to vote by a white registrar, highlighting the systemic racial barriers in place.

Dr. King meets with President Lyndon B. Johnson, urging him to pass federal legislation to protect black citizens’ voting rights. However, Johnson deflects, claiming he has other priorities. Determined to make progress, Dr. King travels to Selma with prominent civil rights activists like Ralph Abernathy, Andrew Young, James Orange, and Diane Nash. They are joined by James Bevel and other members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

As tensions rise, Dr. King and the activists lead marches to the voter registration office, facing violent resistance from local authorities. Annie Lee Cooper retaliates against Sheriff Jim Clark, leading to her arrest alongside Dr. King and others. Meanwhile, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover advises President Johnson to undermine Dr. King’s influence by targeting his personal life. Coretta Scott King expresses concerns about her husband’s safety, and Dr. King seeks solace by calling singer Mahalia Jackson for inspiration.

Alabama Governor George Wallace opposes the movement, while Malcolm X meets with Coretta, pledging to support Dr. King’s efforts by advocating for more radical change. In Marion, Alabama, state troopers brutally attack protesters during a night march, culminating in the shooting of Jimmie Lee Jackson. Dr. King and James Bevel meet with Jackson’s grieving grandfather, Cager Lee, at the morgue, reinforcing the urgency of their cause.

*Selma* is a powerful portrayal of the struggle for racial justice, highlighting the courage and determination of those who fought for equality.
