**Storyline:**
Renowned film director Rohan Khurana, portrayed by Rahul Bhat, is arrested and convicted by a sessions court after assistant costume designer Anjali Dangle, played by Meera Chopra, accuses him of rape. In the High Court, Tarun Saluja, a seasoned criminal lawyer depicted by Akshaye Khanna, meticulously challenges the accuser’s claims. Opposing him is Hiral Gandhi, an idealistic lawyer portrayed by Richa Chadda, who fights passionately for the victim. Hiral, once Tarun’s trainee, has since left his firm due to their differing philosophies. Tarun adheres to the principle that “Law is a fact, Justice is abstract,” emphasizing that lawyers should remain detached from debates over right or wrong. He explains to Hiral that justice often depends on a robust defense and that legal professionals are in the business of law, not justice. This starkly contrasts with Hiral’s emotionally driven pursuit of justice, which led her to leave Tarun’s firm.
Through cross-examination, Tarun exposes manipulated evidence and inconsistencies in the testimonies of key witnesses. It emerges that Anjali and Rohan had a consensual relationship, which began under the pressure of her retaining her job but evolved emotionally. However, when Anjali realized Rohan only wanted a physical relationship while she sought a lifelong commitment, a heated argument ensued. Rohan belittled her, claiming her career would fail without him, and eventually ended their relationship by evicting her from his second flat. Days later, Anjali apologized, and they resumed their relationship, only for her to later report the incident as rape to the police.
Tarun argues that this is a case of a broken relationship, not rape, as the law does not classify consensual relations as such. The film delves into the complexities of legal battles, personal emotions, and the pursuit of justice.
