Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal), the emotionally sensitive and socially awkward youngest daughter of a dysfunctional family, struggles to adjust to a normal life after being hospitalized due to an incident of self-harm. She learns to type and applies for a secretary position at the office of eccentric attorney E. Edward Grey (James Spader). Although Grey insists she is overqualified for the job and describes the work as dull, Lee agrees to the conditions.
Initially, Grey seems frustrated by Lee’s typos and mistakes, but it soon becomes clear that her submissive behavior awakens his sexual desires. After confronting her about her self-harm, he demands she never hurt herself again, marking the beginning of a BDSM relationship. This relationship leads to Lee’s sexual and personal awakening, and she falls deeply in love with Grey. However, Grey struggles with his feelings, feeling shame and disgust over his desires.
While exploring this unconventional relationship, Lee also tries to maintain a more traditional relationship with Peter (Jeremy Davies), even engaging in lukewarm encounters with him. After an intimate moment in the office, Grey fires Lee.
Later, Peter proposes to Lee, who reluctantly accepts. But while trying on her wedding dress, Lee leaves abruptly and runs to Grey’s office, declaring her love for him. Still uncertain, Grey tests Lee’s devotion by ordering her to sit in his chair without moving her hands or feet until he returns. Lee willingly complies, even enduring physical discomfort as hours pass. Grey observes from afar, deeply moved by her unwavering commitment.
