Description: “Sea Fog” (Korean: 해무; Haemoo) is a 2014 South Korean drama directed by Shim Sung-bo. The film is an adaptation of a 2007 stage play, also titled “Haemoo,” which is based on a tragic true event. In 2001, 25 Korean-Chinese illegal immigrants suffocated in the storage tank of a fishing vessel named Taechangho. The crew later dumped their bodies into the sea near Yeosu. The movie follows the story of the 69-ton fishing vessel Jeonjinho, whose crew, struggling with poor catches, decides to smuggle 30 illegal immigrants to Korea for financial gain. However, their plan goes awry when the ship encounters severe fog, rain, and waves on its return journey. To evade the South Korean Maritime Police, the crew hides the immigrants in the fishing tank, putting their lives at risk. Amid the chaos, the youngest crew member, Dong-sik, falls in love with a young female migrant and tries to protect her.

Directed by Shim Sung-bo, “Sea Fog” marks his debut as a feature film director. Notably, Shim co-wrote the screenplay for “Memories of Murder” with acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho, who also produced this film. The cast includes Kim Yoon-seok as the ship’s captain and K-pop singer and actor Park Yoochun in his film debut. Filming took place from October 2013 to March 2014 in various locations, including Masan, Goyang, Busan, and Ulsan.

The film, with a budget of $10 million, was South Korea’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards and the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, though it did not receive nominations. It remains a gripping tale of human struggle and moral dilemmas on the high seas.
