**Storyline:**
Following a sex scandal, literature professor Shim Hak-kyu (Jung Woo-sung) is compelled to leave Seoul and relocate to a small rural town to teach until the situation resolves. He leaves behind his depressed wife (Yoon Se-ah) and daughter, Chung-ee (Park Seo-yeon). In his new town, Hak-kyu becomes involved with Deok-ee (Esom), a naive ticket seller at a soon-to-be-closed amusement park. Their relationship quickly becomes the talk of the town and deeply troubles Deok-ee’s deaf mother (Kim Nam-jin).
With the help of his friend Dong-woo (Lee Chang-hoon), Hak-kyu’s name is eventually cleared, allowing him to return to his university. Before leaving, Deok-ee reveals she is pregnant from their relationship. After aborting the baby, Hak-kyu promises to return for her but instead goes back to his family to comfort his wife.
Though Hak-kyu continues visiting the town occasionally, he avoids Deok-ee, instructing her to “wait.” One night, he offers her money to ensure their relationship remains a secret. During their confrontation, Deok-ee forgets to turn off the stove, resulting in a fire that engulfs her home, tragically trapping her mother inside. Hak-kyu returns home after receiving urgent calls from Chung-ee, only to discover his wife has taken her own life.
Eight years later, Hak-kyu has become a successful writer but leads a reckless lifestyle of drinking, smoking, and gambling, accumulating significant debt. He also faces a looming threat to his vision. Meanwhile, Chung-ee (Park So-young) begins venturing out to clubs, where she encounters Deok-ee, now living under the alias “Yoon Se-jung” and posing as the Shim family’s new neighbor.
Deok-ee frequently visits the Shim household as Hak-kyu’s life spirals further out of control due to his debts and dismissal from the university. She recommends an ophthalmologist (Yang Jin-woo) whose treatment ultimately leaves Hak-kyu blind. Eventually, Mr. Choi (Kim Hee-won), a gambling boss, becomes involved in Hak-kyu’s troubled life.
