Description: An elderly man visits the Normandy Cemetery with his family in the present day. Overcome with emotion, he kneels before a tombstone in sorrow.
On June 6, 1944, American soldiers land at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion. They face heavy casualties while attacking fortified German defenses. Captain John H. Miller of the 2nd Ranger Battalion leads a breakout from the beach. Among the fallen soldiers, one lies face-down in the bloody surf with a pack labeled “Ryan, S.”
In Washington, D.C., General George C. Marshall learns that three of the four Ryan brothers have been killed in action. Daniel Ryan died in New Guinea before D-Day, Sean Ryan at Omaha Beach, and Peter Ryan at Utah Beach. The fourth son, James Francis Ryan, is with the 101st Airborne Division somewhere in Normandy. After reading Abraham Lincoln’s Bixby letter, Marshall orders Ryan to be found and brought home.
Three days after D-Day, Captain Miller is tasked with locating Ryan. He selects seven men from his company: T/Sgt. Mike Horvath, Privates First Class Richard Reiben and Adrian Caparzo, Privates Stanley Mellish and Daniel Jackson, T/4 medic Irwin Wade, and T/5 Timothy Upham, an interpreter from the 29th Infantry Division. They head to Neuville, where they encounter a squad of the 101st Airborne locked in combat. Caparzo is killed by a German sniper, who is then shot by Jackson. They find a Private James Ryan, only to realize he is James Frederick Ryan. From other soldiers, they learn Ryan is defending a crucial bridge in Ramelle.
Approaching Ramelle, Miller decides to take out a German machine gun position at an abandoned radar station, despite his men’s reluctance. Wade is killed during the mission. Influenced by Upham, Miller spares a surviving German soldier. Reiben, losing faith in Miller’s leadership, threatens to desert, leading to a tense standoff with Horvath.
