**Storyline:**
In London, 1961, author Pamela “P. L.” Travers, facing financial difficulties, is encouraged by her agent Diarmuid Russell to travel to Los Angeles and meet Walt Disney. Disney has been pursuing the film rights to her beloved *Mary Poppins* stories for two decades, having promised his daughters he would adapt the books into a movie. Despite her resistance, fearing Disney’s interpretation of her cherished character, Travers agrees to the meeting after Disney offers her unprecedented script approval and promises no animation in the film.
The story alternates with flashbacks to Travers’ challenging childhood in 1906 Australia, which inspired much of *Mary Poppins*. She idolized her imaginative but alcoholic father, Travers Robert Goff, whose struggles deeply affected the family and led to her mother’s attempted suicide. His death from tuberculosis when Travers was seven left a lasting impact. Her aunt, who came to live with the family, later became the primary inspiration for the Mary Poppins character.
In Los Angeles, Travers finds the city and its cheerful inhabitants, including her friendly chauffeur Ralph, artificial and frustrating. At the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, she clashes with the creative team—screenwriter Don DaGradi and composers Richard and Robert Sherman—over their casual approach to adapting her work. She is equally unimpressed by Disney’s jovial demeanor, insisting that Mary Poppins must remain grounded and free from sentimentality.
Travers’ collaboration with Disney and his team is marked by tension as she fiercely protects the integrity of her character and story.
