Description: A prologue reveals that the year depicted was when Earth was lost. The story follows Su and Jack, a millennial couple in their 30s, who decide to take a break from their Internet-dominated and superficial lives in Brooklyn. They plan to spend a week disconnected from their phones at a remote cabin in the forest, owned by their friend Raph. However, Su’s boss fires her when she mentions the trip. As they drive away, mysterious objects begin falling from the sky.
At the cabin, Su and Jack try to reconnect with each other and brainstorm ways to improve themselves, such as baking bread, going vegetarian, or starting a community garden. Initially, they struggle with the urge to turn their phones back on, but it gradually fades over time. Jack notices a strange fuzzy ball-like object in the den, which Su dismisses as a “pouffe” due to its resemblance to a footrest. Despite briefly questioning its presence, they ignore it.
Su creates a handwritten list of activities to deepen their connection. However, Jack discovers she copied the ideas from an online article, pointing out that she brought the Internet with them instead of truly disconnecting. Their discussions about their purpose and contributions to the world grow tense, leading Su to harshly criticize Jack’s character. Angered, Jack storms outside and attempts to chop wood but struggles to even free the axe afterward.
Meanwhile, Su secretly turns on her phone and listens to unsettling voicemails from her mother about giant “rats” infesting New York that consume ethanol. Before she can hear more, the story leaves off on an uncertain note.
