Description: “Sathi” (2002) is a Bengali film that tells a touching story of love, sacrifice, and resilience. The movie follows Bijoy, an aspiring singer from a village in Burdwan district. He moves to Calcutta after being called by a music industry tycoon but is devastated to find his mentor dead upon arrival. Taking refuge with Keshtoda, a kind-hearted alcoholic, Bijoy forms a group of friends and starts working for an insurance company.
During this time, Bijoy encounters Sonali, who lives nearby with her grandmother. Although Sonali has never seen Bijoy, she becomes his biggest admirer after hearing his songs. However, their face-to-face meetings are marked by misunderstandings, leading Sonali to form a negative impression of him. Tragically, an accident at her college causes Sonali to lose her eyesight, leaving Bijoy shattered.
Determined to help, Bijoy makes numerous sacrifices to support Sonali and her grandmother. He pays their rent, moves them into his home after they are evicted, and even sells his mother’s precious ring to fund Sonali’s eye treatment. When his mother passes away, Bijoy keeps her death a secret and takes Sonali to an eye surgeon, where he learns that a costly operation could restore her vision.
To raise the required ₹50,000 (US$700), Bijoy secretly travels to Visakhapatnam, intending to sell his kidney. He gives up his dream of becoming a singer, silently supporting Sonali’s ambition to sing. As Sonali achieves success in her first recording, Bijoy is wrongly arrested as a terrorist and sentenced to five years in prison. Meanwhile, Sonali regains her eyesight and becomes a celebrated singer, unaware of Bijoy’s sacrifices.
The film beautifully portrays themes of selflessness, love, and the pursuit of dreams amidst adversity.
