Description: Sarkar is a 2018 film that follows the story of Sundar Ramaswamy, a successful yet ruthless non-resident Indian businessman based in the United States. Upon arriving in Chennai to cast his vote in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, Sundar discovers that someone has already voted fraudulently in his name. He takes up the issue with the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, demanding a stay on the election results for his constituency, the annulment of the fraudulent vote, and the opportunity to cast his vote legitimately. The Commission agrees to his demands, and Sundar begins to raise awareness about voter fraud, learning that many others have faced similar issues. Alongside this, he reconnects with Nila, his brother’s estranged sister-in-law, rekindling their romance.
Sundar’s actions put him at odds with two powerful and corrupt politicians: M. Masilamani, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and his brother Malarvannan, also known as “Rendu.” Despite Masilamani’s party winning the election, Sundar’s appeal leads the Election Commission to annul the results, and fresh elections are scheduled within 15 days. After surviving an assassination attempt orchestrated by Rendu, Sundar decides to run as an independent candidate against Masilamani, resigning from his corporate position to avoid conflicts of interest.
Initially unpopular due to his corporate image, Sundar wins public support by sharing his humble origins as a fisherman’s son who worked his way up to becoming a successful businessman. His growing influence leads to a confrontation with Masilamani and Rendu, culminating in a violent clash with the police. Realizing the need for systemic reform, Sundar decides to contest elections in all constituencies across Tamil Nadu. He also uncovers video evidence exposing Masilamani’s corruption, including the mysterious deaths of those who attempted to expose him. Sundar plans to reveal this evidence to the media, aiming to discredit Masilamani and bring him to justice.
