Storyline:
Dalbir Kaur (Aishwarya Rai) moves in with her brother Sarbjit’s family after enduring the stillbirth of her daughter and leaving her abusive husband, Baldev (Ankur Bhatia). To support the family, she works at a textile mill alongside Sarbjit. Sarbjit Singh (Randeep Hooda) resides in Bhikhiwind, Punjab, with his wife Sukhpreet (Richa Chadda), their two daughters, Poonam (Ankita Shrivastav) and Swapandeep (Shiwani Saini), and his father. A devoted farmer and loving brother, Sarbjit’s life takes a tragic turn.
In 1990, after drinking heavily, Sarbjit accidentally crosses into Pakistan. He is mistakenly arrested as an Indian spy named Ranjit Singh and accused of orchestrating bomb blasts in Lahore. Despite his pleas of innocence, he is subjected to months of torture before managing to inform his family of his captivity through a letter. Under pressure, Sarbjit falsely confesses to terrorism and is sentenced to death. Dalbir, determined to save her brother, teams up with lawyer Awais Sheikh (Darshan Kumar) to fight for his release. The case gains widespread attention in India and faces backlash in Pakistan, repeatedly delaying Sarbjit’s execution.
By 2012, after 22 years of imprisonment, Sarbjit’s family is finally allowed to visit him in jail. Heartbroken by his deteriorated condition, they cherish the brief reunion. His death sentence is later commuted to life imprisonment, and with nearly twice the length of a standard Pakistani life sentence served, his family anticipates his release. However, the Pakistani government clarifies that the pardon was intended for another prisoner named Surjeet, shattering their hopes. A year later, Sarbjit is brutally attacked by fellow inmates, leaving him in critical condition in a hospital. His sister, wife, and daughters visit him as he slips into a coma and eventually passes away.
