Description: The 2018 film “Sanju” tells the story of Bollywood actor Sanjay “Sanju” Dutt, as depicted in a biography written by D. N. Tripathi. Initially, Sanjay is shocked by the comparison of his life to Mahatma Gandhi and rejects the idea. The Supreme Court of India later sentences him to five years in prison for violating the Arms Act of 1959, related to the 1993 Bombay bombings. His wife, Manyata Dutt, seeks the help of Winnie Diaz, a writer based in London, to pen his biography and present his side of the story to the public.
Reluctant at first, Winnie is intrigued when Zubin Mistry, a real estate developer, tries to dissuade her from writing the book. Sanjay, often labeled a womanizer with over 200 relationships, dismisses these claims, and Winnie begins her interviews. The narrative then shifts to Sanjay’s past, beginning with his Bollywood debut in *Rocky* (1981), orchestrated by his father, Sunil Dutt. Sanjay’s growing resentment towards his father’s controlling nature leads him to experiment with drugs, encouraged by his friend Zubin.
Sanjay’s life takes a turn when his mother, Nargis, is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and they travel to New York for treatment. Her illness deepens his dependence on alcohol and drugs. In New York, he befriends Kamlesh, a fan of Nargis, who helps him stay sober. However, after learning his girlfriend Ruby is engaged to someone else due to his addiction, Sanjay relapses. Despite Kamlesh’s efforts to reunite them, Ruby eventually leaves Sanjay when she discovers he is still using drugs.
Nargis passes away three days before the release of *Rocky*, leaving Sanjay emotionally shattered. With the support of Sunil and Kamlesh, he agrees to attend a rehabilitation center in the U.S. and successfully overcomes his addiction. Upon returning to India, he confronts Zubin for supplying him with drugs, only to discover Zubin had been giving him glucose instead.
