Genre: Action;Mystery;Thriller
Description: Evelyn Salt is imprisoned and tortured in North Korea under suspicion of being a U.S. spy. Her boyfriend, arachnologist Mike Krause, orchestrates widespread publicity about her captivity, compelling the CIA to arrange a prisoner exchange, despite their policy against it. Upon her release, Salt is greeted at the border by her CIA colleague Ted Winter. As they depart, Mike proposes marriage, even after Salt confesses her true identity as a CIA operative.
Two years later, on their wedding anniversary, a Russian defector named Oleg Vasilyevich Orlov enters Salt’s office. During the interrogation, with Winter and CIA counter-intelligence officer Darryl Peabody observing, Orlov reveals a chilling plan: on “Day X,” Russian sleeper agents, known as “KAs,” will strike against the U.S. He claims that Agent “KA-12,” identified as Evelyn Salt, is tasked with assassinating the Russian president at the American Vice President’s funeral. Lie detectors confirm the truth of his story. As Peabody orders Salt’s detention, Orlov escapes after killing two agents. Salt manages to flee the building, running barefoot through the streets. Returning home, she discovers her husband has been kidnapped. After gathering supplies, weapons, and one of Mike’s spiders in a jar, Salt leaves her dog with a neighbor’s child and resumes her escape.
At the funeral, Salt shoots the Russian president and surrenders to Peabody instead of killing him. Later, she tracks Orlov to a barge where he is hiding with other sleeper agents. Through a series of flashbacks, Salt recalls her Soviet upbringing and training. She was switched with an American girl, the real Evelyn Salt, after the girl’s family died in a car crash in the Soviet Union. This allowed her to assume Evelyn’s identity and infiltrate the U.S.
