Description: Jeff’s boss, Bridget, approves his story idea, and he assembles a team consisting of Darius and Arnau, a diligent UW student interning at the magazine to enhance his medical school application. They head to the coastal town of Ocean View to profile the person behind a mysterious ad. Jeff also has a personal motive: to reconnect with a former love interest living in the area.
Darius discovers that Kenneth Calloway, a local grocery store clerk, placed the ad. Jeff’s initial attempt to approach Kenneth backfires, so he sends Darius to connect with him. Her indifferent demeanor helps her quickly gain Kenneth’s trust. As she pretends to join his mission, Kenneth’s paranoia about being monitored by secret agents doesn’t deter her. They bond during training exercises in the woods, and Darius starts developing feelings for him. She confides in Kenneth about losing her mother as a child and her desire to prevent her mother’s death. Kenneth reveals his plan to travel back to 2001 to save his former girlfriend, Belinda, who died in a car accident.
Meanwhile, Jeff tracks down Liz, a woman he had a fling with in his teenage years. While their reunion leads to a night together, Liz refuses to return to Seattle with him, believing it’s just another fleeting relationship. Disappointed, Jeff takes Arnau out, encouraging him to enjoy his youth by spending the night with someone they meet.
The next morning, Bridget updates Jeff with new information: Belinda is alive and lives nearby. Darius interviews Belinda and learns she was only friends with Kenneth. She also discovers Kenneth was the one who drove into her then-boyfriend’s house, though no one was hurt. Later, government agents question Darius, suspecting Kenneth of espionage due to his communication with scientists and theft of lab equipment.
