Description: Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a 2023 American computer-animated action-comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. Directed by Kirk DeMicco and co-directed by Faryn Pearl, the movie features a screenplay by Pam Brady, along with Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi. The story centers on Ruby Gillman, a shy 15-year-old girl striving to fit in at Oceanside High. After defying her mother’s rule and venturing into the ocean, she discovers she is a descendant of ancient krakens, warriors who have protected the seas from evil mermaids for generations. Ruby also learns she is destined to inherit the throne from her grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
Originally pitched to DreamWorks Animation by Brown and DiGuiseppi, the film, initially titled Meet the Gillmans, was announced in June 2021 with a planned 2022 release. Paul Tibbitt was initially set to direct but was later replaced by DeMicco. The film draws inspiration from movies like *Easy A* (2010), *Lady Bird* (2017), and *Booksmart* (2019), as well as John Hughes’ works. The soundtrack, composed by Stephanie Economou, includes original songs by Mimi Webb and Freya Ridings.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 15, 2023, and was released in the U.S. on June 30. Despite its star-studded cast and creative team, the film received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, earning $40 million against a $70 million budget.
