Storyline:
Mike McDermott, a New York City law student and skilled poker player, dreams of winning the World Series of Poker. After losing his entire $30,000 bankroll in a single hand at an underground Texas hold ’em game run by Russian mobster Teddy “KGB,” Mike vows to quit poker and focus on his studies. He takes a part-time job to support himself, despite an offer from his mentor, Joey Knish, to help rebuild his bankroll.
Months later, Mike’s childhood friend Lester “Worm” Murphy is released from prison. While Mike is an honest player, Worm is a notorious cheat and hustler. To help Worm settle a debt, Mike gets him into poker games across town and even sits in on a few, jeopardizing his relationship with his girlfriend, Jo, and his law school commitments.
At the Chesterfield Club, Worm racks up a $10,000 debt under Mike’s name. The situation worsens when Grama, a dangerous pimp working for KGB, takes over Worm’s $25,000 debt. Mike tries to negotiate a payment plan, but Worm’s reckless behavior continues to spiral out of control. As Mike is drawn back into the poker world, Jo ends their relationship, forcing him to confront his choices and priorities.
