**Plot Summary:**
Guy and Rosemary Woodhouse move into the Bramford, a grand Renaissance Revival apartment building in New York City. Despite their friend Hutch’s warnings about the building’s dark history of witchcraft and murder, they choose to stay. Rosemary befriends Terry Gionoffrio, a young woman recovering from drug addiction, who is cared for by their elderly neighbors, Minnie and Roman Castevet. When Terry tragically dies by jumping from the Castevets’ seventh-floor apartment, Rosemary is deeply shaken. Minnie offers Terry’s pendant to Rosemary as a good luck charm, claiming it contains “tannis root.”
Guy’s acting career takes a sudden turn when he lands a leading role after the original actor mysteriously goes blind. Eager to start a family, Guy convinces Rosemary to try for a baby. On the night they plan to conceive, Minnie brings over chocolate mousse for dessert. Rosemary notices a strange, chalky taste in hers and doesn’t finish it, but Guy pressures her to eat more. Soon after, Rosemary feels dizzy and faints, experiencing a harrowing hallucination of being assaulted by a demonic presence as Guy, the Castevets, and other tenants watch.
