Description: “Rosaline” is a 2022 American romantic comedy film directed by Karen Maine, with a screenplay by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. The movie features a talented cast including Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Kyle Allen, Bradley Whitford, and Minnie Driver. Inspired by Rebecca Serle’s 2012 young adult novel “When You Were Mine,” the film offers a fresh take on William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.”
The story is told from the perspective of Rosaline, Juliet’s cousin and Romeo’s former love interest. Heartbroken when Romeo turns his attention to Juliet, Rosaline devises a plan to reclaim his affection and sabotage their newfound romance.
The film premiered on October 6, 2022, at the El Capitan Theatre and was released on October 14, 2022, on Hulu in the United States, Disney+ internationally, and Star+ in Latin America.
Production began in May 2021 when 20th Century Studios acquired the project, originally developed by MGM. Karen Maine was chosen to direct, with Neustadter and Weber adapting Serle’s novel. Casting announcements followed, with Kaitlyn Dever taking on the lead role of Rosaline, Isabela Merced as Juliet, and Kyle Allen as Romeo. Bradley Whitford and Minnie Driver also joined the cast in key roles.
First-look images were unveiled on August 11, 2022, and the official trailer debuted on September 22, 2022, featuring Icona Pop’s hit song “I Love It.” The film has been praised for its modern twist on a classic tale and its ensemble of rising Gen Z stars, including Dever, Merced, and Allen, who are set to appear in other high-profile projects.
