Description: The 2015 movie *Room* depicts the harrowing story of 24-year-old Joy Newsome and her five-year-old son Jack, who live in a confined shed they refer to as “Room.” Located in Akron, Ohio, the shed contains only the barest essentials: a bed, toilet, bathtub, television, and a basic kitchen. Their captor, a man known as “Old Nick,” is Jack’s biological father and the person who kidnapped Joy seven years earlier. Old Nick regularly assaults Joy while Jack sleeps in the closet. Despite her struggles with malnutrition and depression, Joy tries to remain strong for her son, allowing Jack to believe that only Room and its contents are real, while the outside world exists solely on television.
When Old Nick reveals he has lost his job and may no longer afford their supplies, Joy’s fears grow. One night, Jack’s curiosity leads him out of the closet while Old Nick sleeps beside Joy. Horrified, Joy slaps Old Nick away when she wakes and sees the interaction. As punishment, Old Nick cuts off their heat and power. Realizing the direness of their situation, Joy decides to tell Jack about the outside world. Though initially skeptical, Jack becomes curious. Joy attempts to trick Old Nick by having Jack fake a fever, hoping to get him to a hospital where he could alert authorities. However, Old Nick insists he will return with antibiotics instead.
Desperate, Joy devises a plan to have Jack escape. She wraps him in a carpet and instructs him to play dead, hoping Old Nick will remove him from Room. Falling for the ruse, Old Nick places Jack in his truck and drives through a neighborhood. Despite being overwhelmed by his first exposure to the outside world, Jack jumps from the truck and attracts the attention of a passerby. Old Nick tries to reclaim him but fails and flees when Jack resists. The police arrive, rescue Jack, and eventually discover Joy. Both are taken to a hospital, and Old Nick is captured and arrested.
