Description: One morning, Chanticleer, a rooster whose singing brings up the sun daily, faces off against a stranger sent by the Grand Duke of Owls, who despises sunlight. Despite defeating his attacker, Chanticleer forgets to crow, and the sun rises on its own. Mocked and shunned by the other animals, Chanticleer leaves the farm in humiliation. With his absence, the sun disappears, plunging the farm into endless darkness and rain, threatening to flood the land.
This tale is actually a fairy tale being read to a young boy named Edmond by his mother. Their family’s farm is in peril due to an approaching storm. When his mother leaves to help the family, Edmond calls for Chanticleer’s return, but instead encounters the Grand Duke. Angered by Edmond’s interference, the Duke uses his magic breath to turn Edmond into a kitten, intending to devour him. Edmond is rescued by Patou, a clumsy basset hound from Chanticleer’s farm, who scares off the Duke with a flashlight.
Edmond then meets other animals from the farm, all hoping to apologize to Chanticleer. Accompanied by Patou, a timid magpie named Snipes, and an intelligent field mouse named Peepers, Edmond sets off for the city while the other animals stay behind. The group narrowly escapes the Duke’s pygmy nephew, Hunch, and enters the city through an aqueduct.
Meanwhile, Chanticleer, now known as “The King,” has become a famous Elvis impersonator under the management of Pinky Fox, who is secretly working for the Duke to keep Chanticleer away from his friends. During a concert, Chanticleer meets Goldie Pheasant, who is meant to distract him but instead becomes genuinely fond of him. Goldie discovers Pinky’s scheme when he captures Edmond and the others trying to reach Chanticleer.
The story unfolds as they work to reunite Chanticleer with his farm and restore sunlight to their world.
