Description: Set in 2028, the multinational corporation OmniCorp transforms warfare with advanced robotic peacekeepers designed to maintain order in conflict zones like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran. Led by CEO Raymond Sellars, the company seeks to expand its technology into domestic law enforcement. However, the Dreyfus Act, which prohibits the use of militarized drones in the United States, blocks this ambition. Recognizing public opposition to military systems in local communities, Sellars tasks Dr. Dennett Norton and his team with developing an alternative solution. Their proposal: a cyborg police officer. Yet, Norton warns that only individuals who are mentally stable can undergo the transformation, leading to some candidates being rejected.
Detroit police detective Alex Murphy is selected after he is severely injured in a car bombing orchestrated by crime lord Antoine Vallon as retribution for Murphy’s investigation into his activities. Norton convinces Murphy’s wife, Clara, to consent to the experimental procedure. Upon awakening and realizing his transformation into a cyborg, a distraught Murphy attempts to flee but is shut down and returned to the lab. Norton explains that only parts of his head, respiratory organs, heart, and right hand remain human. Horrified, Murphy requests euthanasia, but Norton reminds him of his family’s love and persuades him to continue living.
During combat training with instructor Rick Mattox, Murphy struggles to match the efficiency of OmniCorp’s standard drones. To address this, Norton modifies Murphy’s programming, allowing drone algorithms to control his actions while masking them as his own decisions. This significantly improves his performance but diminishes his empathy as his human instincts are overridden. Later, Murphy visits his family to ensure their safety and comfort his son, David.
