Description: In 1931, during the Great Depression, Michael Sullivan, Sr. serves as an enforcer for Irish mob boss John Rooney in Rock Island, Illinois. Rooney, who raised Sullivan like a son, favors him over his own biological son, Connor, who is impulsive and reckless. After an associate’s brother passes away, Rooney hosts a wake, where tensions rise with Finn McGovern, who implies the Rooneys are responsible. Rooney sends Connor and Sullivan to speak with McGovern, but Connor ends up killing him, leading Sullivan to shoot McGovern’s men. Sullivan’s 12-year-old son, Michael Jr., secretly witnesses the event, and Sullivan ensures his silence.
Later, Rooney tasks Sullivan with collecting a debt from speakeasy owner Tony Calvino. However, Connor, jealous of his father’s bond with Sullivan, sends a note urging Calvino to kill Sullivan. When Calvino tries to act on it, Sullivan kills him and his bodyguard, realizing the danger to his family. He rushes home, only to find Connor has murdered his wife, Annie, and younger son, Peter. Michael Jr. survives, having hidden after being detained at school.
To seek justice and safety, Sullivan and Michael Jr. flee to Chicago, hoping to connect with Al Capone and locate Connor, who has gone into hiding. Sullivan offers to work for the Chicago Outfit in exchange for the chance to kill Connor, but Frank Nitti, Capone’s right-hand man, refuses. Rooney assigns assassin Harlen Maguire to eliminate Sullivan. Maguire tracks them to a diner but fails to kill Sullivan, who escapes after sabotaging Maguire’s car.
