Description: In the opening scenes of “Riders of Justice” (2021), set in Tallinn, an elderly man with a white beard and his young niece consider purchasing a red bicycle as a Christmas gift. The niece expresses her preference for a blue bicycle instead, but the old man cautions her that nothing in life is certain, and Christmas is still far away. The bicycle shopkeeper makes a phone call, and shortly after, a white van stops at a Danish train station where a blue bicycle is chained. Two hooded men exit the van, cut the chain, steal the bicycle, and drive off.
Markus, a soldier stationed in Afghanistan, contacts his wife, Emma, who informs him that their daughter Mathilde’s bicycle was stolen from the train station and their car has broken down. Emma and Mathilde decide to walk to the train station. Meanwhile, Otto and Lennart are at work, presenting a seemingly useless algorithm that they claim can predict future events. Otto argues that all events are the result of preceding events, but due to insufficient data, they are often labeled as coincidences. Their employers are unimpressed and fire them.
On his train ride home, Otto notices a tattooed man in the same car and observes another man discard his sandwich and drink before exiting the train. Emma and Mathilde board the same crowded train, and Otto kindly offers his seat to Emma. Tragically, the train collides with another, severely damaging the right side of the car and resulting in Emma’s death.
Markus returns home to support his grieving daughter, but both struggle to cope with the loss, which creates tension in their relationship. Mathilde believes her father needs grief counseling, but Markus refuses. The film explores their journey through tragedy and the impact of seemingly random events on their lives.
