Description: In 1986, Richard Jewell works as an office supply clerk at a small public law firm, where he forms a bond with attorney Watson Bryant. Eventually, Jewell leaves the firm to pursue a career in law enforcement. He briefly serves as a sheriff’s deputy but is later discharged. By early 1996, he takes on a job as a security guard at Piedmont College but is fired following complaints of overstepping his authority. Jewell then moves in with his mother, Bobi, in Atlanta. During the summer of 1996, he works as a security guard at the Olympic Games, overseeing Centennial Park.
In the early hours of July 27, 1996, while managing a concert by Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, Jewell notices a suspicious package under a bench. An explosives expert confirms it contains a bomb. Jewell, along with the security team, police officers, FBI agent Tom Shaw, and his friend Dave Dutchess, successfully evacuates concert attendees before the bomb detonates. Jewell is initially praised as a hero.
However, after the dean of Piedmont College expresses dislike and suspicions about Jewell, Shaw and his team begin to investigate him. They conclude that Jewell, a white male who aspired to be a police officer, fits the profile of individuals who commit crimes to gain attention. They compare him to others who have orchestrated dangerous situations to appear as heroes.
Shaw shares this suspicion with journalist Kathy Scruggs of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, who publishes a front-page story revealing the FBI’s interest in Jewell as a potential suspect. Scruggs highlights Jewell’s physical appearance, his living situation with his mother, and his work history as evidence supporting the FBI’s profile. This story quickly gains international attention, turning Jewell’s life upside down.
