“Retribution” is an action thriller released in 2023, directed by Nimród Antal and scripted by Chris Salmanpour. The film features Liam Neeson in the lead role, alongside Noma Dumezweni, Lilly Aspell, Jack Champion, Embeth Davidtz, and Matthew Modine. This movie is the third adaptation of the 2015 Spanish film “El desconocido.” It follows a troubled man, portrayed by Neeson, who finds himself trapped in his car after receiving a menacing threat indicating that it will explode if he attempts to escape.
Co-produced by France, Germany, Spain, and the United States, “Retribution” premiered in France on August 23, 2023, and made its U.S. debut on August 25 through Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions.
The story centers around Matt Turner, a financier at Nanite Capital, who lives in Berlin with his wife, Heather, and their two children, Emily and Zach. While taking his children to school, Matt receives a disturbing call from an unknown number with a distorted voice, claiming there is a bomb hidden under his seat that is armed and will detonate if he gets out. The bomb is activated by pressure plates on the seats and a radio frequency, leaving Matt with no choice but to comply with the bomber’s demands to protect his family.
Under the bomber’s orders, Matt witnesses the tragic explosion of Sylvain, another victim of a bomb threat, when his girlfriend panics and tries to flee. The bomber demands that Matt’s wife withdraw €50,000 from their bank safety deposit box and deliver it to him. However, the situation escalates when the bomber unexpectedly instructs her to hand the money to a man in a blue suit, leading to the man’s arrest by the police.
As the news unfolds, implicating Matt in the bombing, Europol agent Angela Brickmann reaches out to him. He desperately tries to prove his innocence and requests that cellular signals be jammed to neutralize the remote trigger. The bomber then discloses a shocking revelation about a €208 million slush fund, putting Matt and his CEO, Anders, in further danger.
With escalating tension and life-threatening stakes, “Retribution” takes viewers on a gripping journey of survival and desperation.
