Storyline:
In 1952, 10-year-old Aretha Franklin lives with her father, C.L. Franklin, a Baptist pastor, and her sisters, Erma and Carolyn, in Detroit, Michigan. The sudden death of her mother, Barbara, leaves her traumatized, and she falls silent for weeks. Her father eventually forces her to sing at church, breaking her silence.
As a teenager and mother of two, Aretha meets Ted White, a local producer, at her father’s house party. They start a conversation, but Rev. Franklin interrupts and warns Ted to stay away from his family. Later, Rev. Franklin surprises Aretha with tickets to New York for a meeting with Columbia Records executive John Hammond. After signing a contract, Aretha begins recording jazz albums, including “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive.”
Despite releasing four albums, Aretha struggles to find a signature hit as a jazz singer. After performing a tribute to Dinah Washington, a family friend and inspiration, she is advised to find songs that resonate with her and stop conforming to her father’s polished image. Aretha reunites with Ted White, starting a relationship. Frustrated with her lack of success after nine albums, she skips recording sessions to spend time with Ted, disappointing her father. She introduces Ted to her family and announces her desire to have him as her manager, which her father reluctantly accepts.
In 1961, Ted and Aretha marry and have a child, but Aretha is eventually dropped by Columbia Records. Ted secures a deal with Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, who pairs Aretha with talented musicians in Muscle Shoals. There, she begins recording her first hit, “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You).” However, the session ends abruptly after Ted gets into a fight with the studio manager.
After a physical altercation with Ted leaves her with a black eye, Aretha returns to Detroit. Upon hearing her song on the radio, she feels empowered to take control of her career. One night, Aretha and Carolyn rearrange Otis Redding’s song “Respect,” which becomes a #1 hit.
