Set in New York City in 2001, the film follows Ally, a student at NYU, and Tyler Hawkins, who audits classes and works at the university bookstore. Ally lives with her father, Neil, a detective with the NYPD, while Tyler and his sister Caroline have a strained relationship with their workaholic businessman father, Charles.
One night, Tyler and his roommate Aidan get caught in a fight and are arrested by Neil. While Aidan calls Charles to bail them out, Tyler avoids a confrontation with his father. Later, Aidan discovers that Ally is Neil’s daughter and suggests to Tyler that he get back at the detective by dating and then breaking up with her. Tyler and Ally begin seeing each other, and their relationship grows deeper.
As their connection strengthens, Tyler reveals to Ally that his brother Michael died by suicide years ago, which is why he has a tattoo of his name. In turn, Ally shares that her mother was fatally shot during a mugging when she was young. Aidan meets Ally for the first time at a party, where she ends up drinking too much. The next day, after a heated argument with her father, Ally goes to Tyler’s apartment, and the two become intimate.
Meanwhile, Caroline, an aspiring artist, has her work featured in an art show. Tyler asks Charles to attend, but he fails to show up, leaving Caroline heartbroken. This leads to a confrontation between Tyler and his father in a boardroom, where Tyler accuses Charles of emotionally distancing himself to avoid the pain of losing another child.
Later, Neil’s partner spots Tyler with Ally on a train. Neil, now suspicious, breaks into Tyler’s apartment and uncovers the initial motive behind Tyler’s interest in Ally. A violent confrontation ensues, forcing Tyler to confess the truth to Ally. Distraught, Ally distances herself, but Aidan visits her to explain that Tyler is genuinely in love with her and that the plan was his own doing.
