Captain Brad Paxton, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, lives in New York City with his wife Kate, an archaeologist, and their daughter. Brad struggles with haunting memories of his service in Syria. After delivering a speech at a conference, Kate travels to Morocco for an archaeological expedition. There, she meets Jean Rashidi, a French-Algerian archaeologist. During their mission to locate an ancient city buried beneath the desert, Kate and her team accidentally cross into Algeria. Insurgents ambush and kidnap Kate, Jean, and Amir Jadid, a Moroccan colleague, though Jadid is later released.
Upon learning of Kate’s abduction, Brad travels to Rabat, Morocco. He reunites with Younes Laalej, a former U.S. Army comrade, and seeks assistance from U.S. Ambassador Williams. Despite hesitations and objections, they gather intelligence that leads them to Jaafar El Hadi, a wanted terrorist leader hiding in Algeria. Meanwhile, El Hadi and his group decide to execute Kate if a $10 million ransom is not paid after their evening prayers.
With support from counter-terrorism agencies, Brad and Younes locate El Hadi’s compound in Abadla. As they prepare to rescue Kate, Williams requests the U.S. President to deploy NAVY SEALs for aid. During a nighttime raid, Brad and Younes eliminate most of the terrorists. Brad finds and hides Kate, but Jean is killed after the French government fails to pay the ransom. Confronted by El Hadi, Younes is forced to arrange the ransom transfer. As El Hadi attempts to escape, the SEALs arrive, killing him and his remaining men. Brad and Younes destroy the compound but are presumed dead when incapacitated. The SEALs rescue Kate and evacuate the area.
