Mikey Saber returns to his Gulf Coast hometown of Texas City after being away for 17 years. Bruised and nearly broke, he turns up at the modest home of his estranged wife, Lexi, and her mother, Lil. He pleads to stay with them, but Lexi and Lil insist he must find a job and contribute to the household.
The charming and smooth-talking Mikey attempts to secure work at a local diner and a Dollar General store but is held back by a nearly two-decade gap in his resume. When he reveals to potential employers that he spent those years working as a porn actor in Los Angeles, they reject him. Desperate for income, Mikey convinces Leondria, a local marijuana dealer, to supply him with weed to sell. Though Leondria and her daughter, June, doubt Mikey’s ability to succeed, he proves them wrong by returning with his earnings, and their business partnership continues.
Mikey pays Lexi and Lil a month’s rent in advance and takes them to a donut shop to celebrate. There, he becomes infatuated with Strawberry, a 17-year-old employee. Mikey frequently visits the shop, eventually persuading Strawberry to let him sell pot to the construction workers who are regular customers. Once Strawberry turns 18, she and Mikey begin a romantic relationship.
Meanwhile, Mikey reconnects with his neighbor, Lonnie, who is fascinated by Mikey’s exaggerated tales of his porn career and sexual adventures. The two spend time visiting strip clubs and hanging out, but Mikey’s reckless behavior causes Lonnie to swerve on a highway off-ramp, resulting in a massive car pile-up. Mikey convinces Lonnie to hide his involvement, and Lonnie takes the blame when the police arrest him.
After sleeping on the couch for several nights, Mikey rekindles his sexual relationship with Lexi, who eventually allows him to share her bedroom. However, when Mikey disappears for a week with Strawberry, Lexi grows suspicious and jealous. Their argument escalates, and Lexi throws a coffee pot, narrowly missing Mikey’s head.
