Description: In 1980, FBI agent Will Graham meets with forensic psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter to discuss a case involving a serial killer who extracts edible body parts from victims. Graham deduces the killer is a cannibal and realizes Lecter is the perpetrator. Lecter attacks Graham, who fights back, injuring both of them before they collapse. Lecter is imprisoned, and Graham, deeply traumatized, retires to Florida with his family.
Years later, a new serial killer known as the Tooth Fairy murders two families during full moons. With another full moon approaching, agent Jack Crawford convinces Graham to assist in profiling the killer. After examining the crime scenes, Graham decides to consult Lecter, who agrees to help but taunts him during their meeting.
The Tooth Fairy is Francis Dolarhyde, a man with a split personality who believes he is transforming into the Great Red Dragon, inspired by a William Blake painting. His violent behavior stems from childhood abuse. Meanwhile, tabloid reporter Freddy Lounds, who previously targeted Graham, now seeks leads on the Tooth Fairy. A letter from the killer is found in Lecter’s cell, expressing admiration for him and warning Graham. Lecter uses the opportunity to reveal Graham’s home address through a newspaper, forcing his wife and son to flee.
In an attempt to draw out the Tooth Fairy, Graham interviews Lounds, who insults the killer. Enraged, Dolarhyde kidnaps Lounds, tortures him, and forces him to retract his statements before ultimately killing him.
