The story begins with a montage highlighting the fallout of an economic crisis in the European Union and a weakened NATO alliance. North Korea, now led by Kim Jong Un, and an ultranationalist-dominated Russia collaborate, leaving the U.S. mainland vulnerable due to increased deployment of American troops abroad. The threat of a cyberattack further endangers the nation.
U.S. Marine Jed Eckert returns home to Seattle, Washington, on leave. He reunites with his father, Sergeant Tom Eckert, his brother Matt Eckert, and childhood friends Toni Walsh and Erica Martin, who is Matt’s girlfriend. After a mysterious power outage, Jed and Matt witness an invasion by North Korean paratroopers and transport aircraft. Their father instructs them to flee to their cabin in the woods while he helps the townspeople. They are joined by a group of friends, including Toni, but Erica is captured by the North Koreans.
As tensions rise, the group debates whether to surrender or resist. Pete, one of their companions, betrays their location. Captain Cho, a North Korean commander, brings Sergeant Eckert and the mayor to pressure the group into surrendering. Although the mayor persuades some to comply, Cho executes Sergeant Eckert for refusing to cooperate.
Determined to fight back, Jed and the others form a resistance group called the Wolverines, named after their school mascot. After acquiring weapons, establishing a base in an abandoned mine, and receiving training from Jed, they launch guerrilla attacks against the invaders and collaborators. Matt successfully rescues Erica, but the mission results in Greg’s death. In retaliation, the North Koreans bombard the Wolverines’ base, killing Danny and Julie. The survivors retreat deeper into the woods to continue their fight.
