Storyline:
In Monte Carlo, a young woman working for Mrs. Van Hopper meets Maxim de Winter, a recent widower. After a short courtship, they marry and move to his grand estate, Manderley, in England. There, she encounters Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, who was deeply devoted to Maxim’s late wife, Rebecca. Rebecca tragically died in a boating accident, and the staff, as well as Maxim’s friends, held her in high regard. Mrs. Danvers constantly undermines the new Mrs. de Winter, making her feel inadequate in comparison to Rebecca.
Jack Favell, Rebecca’s cousin, visits Manderley, claiming Mrs. Danvers invited him. This angers Maxim, who had previously banned Favell from the estate. Maxim accuses his new wife of infidelity, which she denies. She confronts Mrs. Danvers for conspiring against her by inviting Favell and demands her resignation, but Mrs. Danvers denies any involvement.
Despite their initial conflict, the two women begin working together. Mrs. Danvers helps Mrs. de Winter organize the Manderley Costume Ball. She suggests that Mrs. de Winter wear a dress modeled after a de Winter ancestor. However, when she wears it, the guests are shocked, and Maxim is enraged. Mrs. de Winter discovers that Rebecca had worn the same dress the previous year. Feeling manipulated and believing Maxim regrets their marriage, she attempts to flee.
Mrs. Danvers openly expresses her disdain for the new Mrs. de Winter, accusing her of trying to replace Rebecca. She even tries to persuade her to jump from a window. However, a nearby shipwreck during a storm interrupts her plan. The ship is revealed to be Rebecca’s, and her decomposed body is found onboard.
This discovery reopens the investigation into Rebecca’s death. Maxim confides in his wife, admitting that his marriage to Rebecca was a farce and that he despised her. He describes her as cruel, selfish, adulterous, and manipulative.
