Ghatak portrays Nilkantha Bagchi, an alcoholic and disillusioned intellectual who describes himself as “a broken intellectual.” His wife leaves him, taking his books and records—his only remaining possessions. When Bagchi protests, she explains she is taking them so their son can grow up with these intellectual treasures. He manages to keep a fan, which he sells to buy liquor, beginning his unusual journey.
His first companion is Naciketa, followed by Bongobala, a homeless woman who arrives just as he is about to leave. Bongobala, who has lost her homeland Bangladesh, is described by Bagchi as the spirit of Bangladesh, driven away from her country.
Next, Bagchi encounters a group of artists in a remote location, discussing art. He meets his friend Satyajit Basu, who offers him Scotch, which he refuses. When Bagchi asks for money, Satyajit gives him a bundle of notes, but Bagchi takes only one, urging him to “Think, think, practice thinking.”
Later, he meets Jagannath Bhattacharjee, a village Sanskrit teacher whose school closed after political violence. Jagannath moves to Kolkata in search of work but is mocked by children who call him mad and often engages in arguments.
Bagchi and Jagannath arrive in a village where they meet Panchanan Ustad. Ustad and Jagannath frequently clash, representing contrasting Vedic and Folk perspectives. Nilkantha reunites with his wife and ventures into a forest, where he meets Naxalites. He describes them as the “cream of Bengal”—misguided, yet both successful and unsuccessful. Their encounter ends abruptly when police arrive, and a shootout ensues.
