Description: Recovering from a broken leg, professional photographer L. B. “Jeff” Jefferies is confined to a wheelchair in his Manhattan apartment. His rear window overlooks a courtyard and neighboring apartments. During a heatwave, Jeff observes his neighbors, including Lars Thorwald, a jewelry salesman with an ailing wife. Jeff’s girlfriend, Lisa Fremont, and his nurse, Stella, visit regularly. One night, during a thunderstorm, Jeff hears a woman scream and the sound of breaking glass. Later, he notices Thorwald leaving with a suitcase and making repeated late-night trips. The next day, Jeff sees Thorwald cleaning a knife and saw, and he observes the disappearance of Thorwald’s wife. Suspecting foul play, Jeff shares his concerns with Lisa and Stella. They witness Thorwald acting suspiciously and become convinced he murdered his wife. Jeff contacts Detective Tom Doyle, who finds no evidence of a crime. Meanwhile, a neighbor’s dog is found dead, and Jeff believes Thorwald killed it to hide something buried in the courtyard. Lisa and Stella investigate but find nothing. Lisa then enters Thorwald’s apartment, where she discovers Mrs. Thorwald’s wedding ring. When Thorwald confronts her, the police arrive, but Lisa signals Jeff with the ring, exposing Thorwald’s guilt.
