**Storyline:**
Set in 2045, humanity seeks refuge from reality in the OASIS, a virtual reality universe created by James Halliday and Ogden Morrow of Gregarious Games. Following Halliday’s death, his avatar, Anorak, announces a game: the first person to find a hidden Easter egg within the OASIS will gain ownership of it. The egg is locked behind a gate requiring three keys, which can only be obtained by completing three challenges. This contest attracts countless “Gunters” (egg hunters) and the attention of Nolan Sorrento, CEO of Innovative Online Industries (IOI). Sorrento aims to control the OASIS by flooding it with intrusive ads, using an army of indentured employees called “Sixers” to secure the egg.
Wade Watts, under his avatar Parzival, is a dedicated Gunter who participates in the first challenge—a seemingly impossible race—alongside his best friend Aech and Art3mis, a female avatar he admires. Wade regularly explores Halliday’s Journals, a simulation of Halliday’s life and interests, managed by the Curator. After figuring out a trick to win the race by driving backward, Wade earns the Copper Key. Art3mis, Aech, and their friends Daito and Sho also succeed, forming the High-5 on the OASIS leaderboard.
Sorrento tasks the mercenary i-R0k with uncovering Parzival’s real identity, hoping to bribe Wade into securing the egg for IOI. Meanwhile, Wade and Art3mis discover clues in the Journals about Halliday’s past relationship with Karen “Kira” Underwood, Morrow’s wife. At the Distracted Globe nightclub, Wade confesses his feelings and real identity to Art3mis, but their moment is interrupted by an IOI raid. Art3mis leaves Wade, explaining her father’s debt to IOI. Eavesdropping on their conversation, i-R0k reports back to Sorrento, who confronts Wade with his offer.
