Description: The 1996 movie *Ransom* follows the harrowing story of multi-millionaire Tom Mullen and his wife Kate. While attending a science fair, their son Sean is kidnapped by a group including Maris Conner, a caterer working for the Mullens, along with brothers Clark and Cubby Barnes, and tech expert Miles Roberts. The mastermind behind the abduction is NYPD Detective Jimmy Shaker, Maris’ boyfriend. The kidnappers demand $2 million via email, prompting Tom to contact the FBI. Special Agent Lonnie Hawkins takes charge, setting up operations in Tom’s New York penthouse.
Tom suspects Jackie Brown, a union machinist imprisoned due to one of his business scandals, might be involved. However, Brown denies any role. Following the FBI’s plan, Tom attempts to deliver the ransom after receiving instructions from Shaker, who disguises his voice. A meeting with Cubby in a New Jersey quarry turns violent, resulting in Cubby’s death before he can reveal Sean’s location.
Shaker arranges another ransom drop, but Tom devises a bold plan: he appears on television, offering the ransom as a bounty for the kidnappers instead. He promises to withdraw the bounty and drop charges if Sean is returned unharmed. Despite Kate and Agent Hawkins’ objections, Tom stands firm. Shaker retaliates by luring Kate to a meeting and presenting Sean’s blood-stained shirt as a threat. In response, Tom doubles the bounty to $4 million.
Shaker makes a final call, warning Tom to pay the ransom, but Tom refuses. A gunshot and Sean’s scream lead Tom and Kate to fear the worst for their son. The movie explores themes of desperation, strategy, and the lengths a father will go to save his child.
