Description: “Raging Fire” is a 2021 Hong Kong-Chinese action film directed by Benny Chan, marking his final directorial work before his passing on August 23, 2020. The movie features Donnie Yen as a dedicated and morally upright police officer, Cheung Sung-bong, who has spent years on the front lines of law enforcement, solving numerous high-profile cases. Despite his achievements, Cheung is seen as an outlier in his department due to his uncompromising principles, which have hindered his career. His former protégé, Yau Kong-ngo, admires him but disagrees with Cheung’s rigid methods, believing in taking shortcuts to achieve results. Over time, Yau rises to Cheung’s level, but their paths diverge, leading to an intense confrontation between the two.
The film delves into themes of loyalty, justice, and revenge as Cheung and Yau find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Released on July 30, 2021, in Mainland China and August 19, 2021, in Hong Kong, the movie received praise for its gripping storyline and action sequences. Nicholas Tse, who portrays Yau, also composed and performed the film’s theme song, “Confrontation,” with lyrics by Kenny So. A promotional cover of the song “A Real Man” was released as a tribute to Benny Chan, featuring performances by Andy Lau, Donnie Yen, Wu Jing, Nick Cheung, and Jordan Chan.
Initially announced at the 2019 Hong Kong Film & TV Market (FILMART), the production of “Raging Fire” began in April 2019. Filming took place entirely in Hong Kong, with Donnie Yen and Benny Chan collaborating closely to bring the project to life. The movie’s cast and crew held a blessing ceremony on July 23, 2019, at a specially constructed set in Quarry Bay Film Studio. Production wrapped up in September 2019, culminating in a cinematic tribute to Benny Chan’s legacy in the film industry.
