Description: Rachel Getting Married is a 2008 film that follows the story of Kym Buchman, who is temporarily released from drug rehab to attend her older sister Rachel’s wedding to Sidney Williams. Kym’s history of drug abuse and erratic behavior has made her the outcast of the family, creating tension with those around her. Upon arriving at her childhood home, she struggles to reconnect with her family amidst the wedding preparations. Kym feels her father’s concern is more about mistrust than care, and she is upset that Rachel chose someone else as the maid of honor, doubting Kym’s ability to participate. Rachel, in turn, feels overshadowed by Kym’s addiction, especially after Kym’s emotional apology at the rehearsal dinner, part of her twelve-step program.
The family’s underlying pain stems from a tragic event years earlier, when Kym, while intoxicated, caused a car accident that led to the death of her younger brother, Ethan. This grief lingers in conversations and memories throughout the wedding weekend. As the family prepares for the wedding, Kym encounters a man from her past who thanks her for inspiring him during rehab, unaware that Kym’s story of strength was fabricated to avoid confronting her own struggles.
