Surinder Sahni, a shy and mild-mannered employee at Punjab Power, attends the wedding of Taani Gupta, the cheerful daughter of his former teacher, Professor Shirish Gupta. Surinder is immediately smitten by her but struggles to express his feelings. Tragedy strikes when Taani’s fiancé and his family are killed in a car accident, leaving Professor Gupta devastated and triggering a severe heart attack. On his deathbed, the ailing professor pleads with Surinder to marry Taani, fearing she will be left alone after his passing. Both Surinder and Taani agree, with Surinder harboring his love for her and Taani resigning herself to fulfilling her father’s dying wish.
After the professor’s death and funeral, Surinder and Taani have an unplanned marriage, and he takes her to his ancestral home in Amritsar, Punjab. Surinder treats Taani with kindness and respect, even giving her his bedroom while he moves to the attic. However, he is too afraid to confess his love for her. Meanwhile, Taani, unwilling to marry Surinder, locks herself in his room, consumed by grief.
Surinder’s friend Balwinder Khosla, known as Bobby, and his colleagues discover his marriage and invite themselves over for a celebration. Surinder is apprehensive about introducing them to a despondent Taani but is taken aback when she joins the gathering. That night, Taani resolves to fulfill her role as Surinder’s wife, though she believes she can never love him or anyone else again.
