Description: Hollywood is currently facing a significant identity crisis. The pandemic highlighted the true value of entertainment, while simultaneously exposing the vulnerabilities of the theatrical experience when people are unable—or unwilling—to leave their homes. This situation has pushed Hollywood into an even more risk-averse mindset than usual, with an increasing reliance on existing intellectual properties (IPs) to produce content for both film and television. However, this strategy is beginning to lose its appeal.
“R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned,” directed by Paul Leyden and featuring Jeffrey Donovan, Penelope Mitchell, and Richard Brake, is a sequel and prequel to the 2013 film that starred Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds. Based on a popular comic book series, the film follows Sheriff Roy, who is killed in a shooting just days before his daughter’s wedding. After his death, he is recruited by the R.I.P.D., a heavenly department tasked with combating demons wreaking havoc on Earth.
The original “R.I.P.D.” was a box office failure, signaling a turning point for Jeff Bridges, who had been heavily involved in genre films that were often generic and poorly constructed. For Ryan Reynolds, it marked the end of an era before his triumphant return with “Deadpool.” The film suffered from a weak script and underdeveloped characters, so when the series failed to continue, few were disappointed. It was released during a time when every studio was eager to create its own Marvel Cinematic Universe, but many such attempts were doomed from the start.
